Electricity Consumption at Public Charging Stations Increase 72% Year-On-Year

As India’s automotive sector shifts towards cleaner energy, electricity consumption at public charging stations (PCS) jumped by 72 percent in 2025-26, indicating a steady increase in the use of EVs.

According to data compiled by Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the electric consumption at PCSs increased from 848 million units (MU) in FY2025 to 1460 MU in FY2026. Over 74% of this electricity was consumed by heavy-duty public chargers, used primarily by electric buses, trucks, and other high-capacity passenger coaches. While light, medium and commercial vehicles consumed 26%.

The data is not comprehensive since it doesn’t include consumption data from all northeastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and UTs of Puducherry, Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, as the discoms in these regions didn’t provide the consumption data according to CEA.

“ The data on energy consumption in these EV charging stations is also important for the purpose of load forecasting, electricity distribution planning, and integrated  resource planning in the country” the report stated.

PCSs in Maharashtra, consumed 378 million units of 26% of the total PCS consumption, followed by Delhi (359 MU), Karnataka (213 MU), and Telangana (111 MU). With the government push, EV sales in India reached 2.5 million units in 2025. This marked a 24.6% growth in EV sales on a year-on-year basis. With this, EVs account for 8.5% of all the new vehicle registrations, with strong growth in two-wheeler, three-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments.
