Challenger labels outpace 2025 sales in under nine months as falling battery costs and funding boosts fuel rapid expansion.
India’s electric two-wheeler sector is undergoing a shift, with challenger manufacturers gaining ground alongside established automotive giants. Companies including Greaves Electric Mobility, River Mobility, Bgauss Auto, and Simple Energy are achieving record registration volumes, prompting a wave of capital raising to fund production expansion.
Data from the official Vahan portal reveals that several brands have already surpassed their full-year 2025 sales figures in under nine months. Greaves Electric Mobility, maker of Ampere scooters, recorded 66,069 units sold so far in 2026, easily exceeding its 2025 total of 57,699 units as the firm targets doubling its market share to over 10per cent within two years. Yamaha-backed River Mobility more than doubled its EV sales to 35,250 units, while Mumbai-based Bgauss Auto registered 32,101 units, eclipsing its 2025 total of 25,131. Bengaluru-based Simple Energy also reached 11,000 units, up from 6,628 units in the previous year.
This momentum coincides with total national electric two-wheeler registrations reaching a record 1.44 million units in 2026, topping the 2025 peak of 1.34 million. According to Crisil Ratings, local battery cell production under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has lowered cell costs, narrowed the price gap with imports, and broadened consumer choices.
To keep pace with demand, smaller brands are raising fresh capital to strengthen their operations. River Mobility recently secured $120 million in Series C funding to expand existing facilities, construct a new greenfield plant, and launch new models. Bgauss Auto raised $11.6 million in a late-stage funding round, while IPO-bound Simple Energy is reportedly preparing a major fundraise to enhance production capacity.
While legacy manufacturers and top-tier start-ups—such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, Hero MotoCorp, and Ola Electric—retain an 83 per cent market share, analysts expect the next phase of competition to hinge on dealership footprints, financing options, and long-term after-sales support.
