The company has reinstated more than 300 experienced engineers, saying AI performs best when backed by decades of real-world manufacturing knowledge.
Ford Motor has rehired more than 300 experienced quality engineers after finding that artificial intelligence alone could not match the expertise needed to maintain high manufacturing standards.
The automaker had introduced AI across parts of its production process, including deploying around 900 AI-powered cameras to detect defects early and reduce disruptions. However, company executives said the technology did not deliver the expected results.
Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, said AI is only as effective as the knowledge used to train it. He admitted the company had overlooked the value of veteran engineers whose decades of experience could not be easily replicated by automated systems.
According to Poon, Ford initially believed feeding design requirements into AI tools would be enough to ensure high-quality vehicles. Instead, the company found that the systems struggled to identify issues that experienced engineers could spot through years of hands-on expertise.
To close that gap, Ford has brought back veteran engineers to improve quality inspections, train AI models with real-world knowledge and mentor younger employees. The company now sees human expertise and AI as complementary rather than interchangeable.
The shift comes as Ford regained the top position among mainstream automakers in the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, its first time leading the rankings since 2010. The company credited the achievement to leadership changes across engineering, manufacturing and supply chain operations, along with the return of experienced engineers who have helped strengthen both vehicle quality and AI-driven processes.
