French technology highlights at SmartCards Expo 2013

Tuesday, October 15, 2013: The French Trade Commission UBIFRANCE in India is organizing -for the 3rd consecutive year- a French Pavilion at SmartCards Expo 2013 and its concurrent exhibitions being held from the 16th to the 18th of October in New Delhi, which stand as the leading events in India on technologies, solutions and services related to smartcards, biometrics, RFID/NFC, secure e/m-Payments, secure e-Documents… The French Pavilion will bring together leading companies from the French AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) and Secure Technologies industry to showcase their state of the art technologies and evaluate business opportunities in the Indian market.

Digital trust is a wide topic covering both security issues and quality of data aspects.

– Security: security of digital data, security of information, protection of databases, security of public and private data, protection of identity, secure transactions…

– Quality of data: integrity of data, viability of data, giving trust to the users, transparency of information, confidence in IT systems.

It makes use of a different set of technologies, solutions and services including mostly AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) and IT.

Based on data from the French Alliance for Digital Trust (CAN – Alliance pour la Confiance Numérique), 700 to 800 French enterprises operate in the field of digital trust with around 100 solution editors, 100 equipment manufacturers and 500 to 600 services companies. Among those, the biggest of those enterprises are worldwide leaders in chips and smartcards, ID Management and biometrics, home security and payments; with SMEs pioneering in core technologies and niche markets. This sector also differentiates itself by its very high level of technology, with an average of 15% of revenues on digital trust re-invested in R&D by French enterprises (with even higher figures among equipment manufacturers and solution editors), but also its need for reliability.

At the same time, India appears as a front-runner in terms of adoption of digital trust technologies especially in the field of Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) through the implementation of strategic national projects making use of identification and secure technologies (Aadhaar, RSBY, MGNREGA, e-Driving licenses…) and the development of very innovative projects and concepts to tackle for instance financial inclusion and promotion of non-cash payment modes.

As such, the Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) market in India is, for instance, expected to grow from USD 581 million in 2010 to close to USD 1 billion in 2012 and nearly USD 1.3 billion by 2014 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22.37 percent according to Frost & Sullivan. Of the AIDC technologies, smartcards take the lions’ share with 2010 revenues pegged at USD 510 million and expected to reach USD 903 million by 2014, but biometrics and RFID/NFC are being expected to capture a larger share of the AIDC market in the near future.

In this positive context, the French Pavilion at the SmartCards Expo 2013 on the 16th to 18th of October will gather 7 renowned companies offering avant-garde applications in the fields of smartcards, biometrics, RFID/NFC, secure e/m-Payments, secure documents: ELA INNOVATION, GEMALTO, ID3 TECHNOLOGIES, MICROPROSS, NBS TECHNOLOGIES, SAFRAN MORPHO and UINT – MEREAL BIOMETRICS. The main objective of these French companies is to present and promote their latest technological developments in their area of expertise while working out partnerships with key Indian stakeholders and industry players.

The mission of this trade delegation will start on the 15th of October in New Delhi with an Indo-French Seminar which will include presentations of key Indian stakeholders -both from the Indian digital trust industry and public agencies- addressing the status of digital trust in India and the advancement of the most significant initiatives taken by the Government of India in the fields of secured identification and payment systems. Their round of presentations will be followed by a session dealing with latest technological developments in those fields and their opportunities for future.
