Fujitsu and AMD have entered a strategic partnership to develop open-source computing platforms focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). The companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlining plans for collaboration across technology development, commercialization, and expanding open-source and energy-efficient platforms.

As AI, particularly generative AI, expands rapidly, the demand for optimized computing architectures that cater to varied cost and power performance requirements has increased. This collaboration aims to address those needs by merging strengths of both the companies: Fujitsu’s new FUJITSU-MONAKA Arm-based processor and AMD’s Instinct accelerators. The partnership will focus on engineering, ecosystem development, and business expansion, with an eye toward the broader adoption of sustainable AI and HPC solutions.

The joint effort includes the integration of Fujitsu’s supercomputer-based CPU technology with AMD’s GPU capabilities. They aim to establish innovative computing solutions supporting open-source AI and HPC initiatives. Targeted for completion by 2027, these platforms are expected to provide customers greater flexibility in large-scale AI applications while promoting energy efficiency, reducing data centre costs, and expanding use cases.

A key aspect of the collaboration is their commitment to an open-source software ecosystem. Leveraging the ROCm AI/HPC software stack and MONAKA software, the companies will work with the open-source community to optimise software development for these new platforms. This collaboration is intended to make AI technology more accessible and sustainable by providing energy-efficient, high-performance options for various industries. They also plan to establish a joint customer centre to support global AI computing initiatives, particularly promoting AI adoption and sustainable development. This effort includes co-creation initiatives with clients worldwide to support using AI technologies in diverse applications, aiming to create an inclusive, sustainable AI/HPC ecosystem.
