The Gujarat Power Corporation aka Gujarat Solar Park has been recognised for its significant contribution to the Indian energy sector with 10th Wartsila-Mantosh Sondhi Award. The solar park located in Charanka village, Gujarat has been in operation since its opening earlier this year.
In the Indian solar sector, Gujarat accounts for 66 per cent to country’s total solar power. The solar park, which is covered over 3,000 acres of land near the Rann of Kutch can generate power at a capacity of 600 MW. This park will generate two-thirds of India’s total 900 MW of solar power production and will produce 214 MW of photovoltaic solar capacity.
The solar park is being operated by 21 companies who are involved in its management and development process. Out of the 21, four companies represent US. The park will also manufacture solar power plant panels and other related equipment. It will also provide training to local people of Gujarat to work at solar parks.
According to the Gujarat government, the solar project will lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions to the tune of eight million tonnes. D J Pandian, principal secretary, Energy and Petrochemicals, with the state government accepted the award from Bjorn Rosengren, president and ceo, Wartsila Corporation. The company is a global leader in complete life cycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets.
