India added 4.6 GWh of battery energy storage capacity in the first quarter of 2026, taking the country’s total installed capacity to 5.9 GWh, according to a report cited by The Economic Times.
India added 4.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage capacity during the first quarter of 2026, marking a sharp rise from the 442.7 megawatt-hours (MWh) added in the previous quarter, according to India’s Energy Storage Landscape Report by Mercom India Research.
According to The Economic Times, the addition took the country’s cumulative installed battery energy storage capacity to 5.9 GWh as of March 2026. Standalone energy storage accounted for 73% of the installed capacity, followed by solar-plus-wind projects with storage at 15% and solar-plus-storage projects at 11%.
“The strong growth in Q1 2026, coupled with a rapidly expanding project pipeline, reflects how quickly energy storage is becoming a core part of India’s power infrastructure,” said Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group.
Rajasthan led the country with 42% of cumulative installed energy storage capacity, followed by Gujarat at 25% and Maharashtra at 9%.
The report noted that India’s energy storage development pipeline reached 69 GWh in Q1 2026, including 41 GWh of standalone storage projects. In addition, pumped storage projects (PSPs) remained robust, with 57.2 GW under various stages of development and 5.7 GW operational as of March 2026.
Multiple agencies issued tenders totalling 18 GW during the quarter and auctioned more than 4 GW of standalone storage projects, highlighting continued momentum in the sector.
