The Department of Posts has launched a drone-based mail and parcel delivery service in Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant step toward modernizing postal operations in remote and difficult-to-access regions. Announced by Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the service became operational on June 12, 2026, connecting Mandi Head Post Office with Rehardhar Branch Post Office.
The initiative was introduced following interactions between the minister and postal staff, including Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, who highlighted the challenges of delivering mail across mountainous terrain. In response, the Department of Posts explored the use of drone technology to improve connectivity and reduce delivery times in underserved areas.
The Mandi–Rehardhar route, spanning approximately 12 kilometers, previously required more than two hours for mail transportation through conventional means. With the deployment of drones, the same journey can now be completed in around seven minutes, significantly improving operational efficiency and service reliability.
The launch serves as a pilot for a broader rollout planned by the Department of Posts. Over the next two to three months, drone-based mail transmission is expected to be introduced on nearly 150 identified routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam. The programme aims to enhance access to postal services in remote regions while overcoming geographical barriers that often delay deliveries.
In addition to reducing transit times, the drone network offers real-time tracking capabilities and a more environmentally sustainable mode of transport. Officials believe the initiative will strengthen last-mile connectivity, improve service delivery, and support greater social and economic inclusion in rural and mountainous communities.
The move reflects the government’s growing focus on integrating advanced technologies into public service infrastructure, with drones emerging as a key tool for improving connectivity in challenging terrains.
