India’s Electronics Manufacturing Grows 22 Times In a Decade, Says Minister

“From toys to mobile phones, defence equipment to EV motors, production is shifting back to India,” says the IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X, celebrating India’s growth in electronics manufacturing.

The Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has outlined India’s significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing, revealing that the sector’s value has grown 22.32 times in the past decade.

In a series of posts on social media platform X last week, Vaishnaw shared key figures highlighting the sector’s expansion, including the creation of over 1.2 million direct and indirect jobs.

Moreover, he stated that India’s mobile and electronics manufacturing sector has seen remarkable growth. In 2014, the country had just two mobile manufacturing units; today, it boasts over 300.

The value of mobile phone manufacturing has also surged from ₹189 billion in FY14 to ₹4.22 trillion in FY24. Exports, almost non-existent in 2014, have now surpassed ₹1.29 trillion. Today, 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are made domestically, a dramatic increase from 26% in 2014-15.

Vaishnaw commended the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative, which has played a crucial role in this transformation, enabling global companies like Apple to shift manufacturing operations to India.

Sharing press coverages on X, he highlighted that in addition to mobile phones, India has started producing critical electronic components such as lithium-ion cells, chargers, USB cables, and camera modules.

“The focus is now on moving deeper into the value chain by increasing production of components and chips. Between 1950 and 1990, restrictive policies stifled manufacturing. Make in India is reversing that trend,” he said on X.

Looking to the future, Vaishnaw also mentioned that the focus is now on advancing deeper into the value chain, particularly in semiconductor production. The India Semiconductor Mission, alongside major projects from companies like Micron, Tata Electronics, and CG Power, is paving the way for a semiconductor manufacturing base in India.
