Tata Motors led the electric passenger vehicle market, while TVS Motor Company emerged as the top player in electric two-wheelers.
India’s electric vehicle market kicked off FY27 with strong momentum, as sales across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and commercial EVs recorded sharp year-on-year growth in April 2026.
According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric passenger vehicle sales surged 75.14% to 23,506 units in April, compared to 13,421 units sold during the same month last year. Tata Motors retained its leadership position in the segment, selling 8,543 electric cars last month, up 77.17% from 4,822 units a year earlier.
Mahindra also posted robust growth, with EV sales rising nearly 64% year-on-year to 5,413 units in April 2026. Meanwhile, JSW MG Motor India recorded sales of 5,006 electric passenger vehicles, registering a 32.54% increase over the 3,777 units sold in April 2025.
The electric two-wheeler market also witnessed strong expansion. Total sales in the segment climbed 60.73% year-on-year to 148,740 units last month, compared to 92,538 units in April last year. TVS Motor Company emerged as the top-selling brand with 37,683 units, nearly doubling its sales from 19,976 units recorded in the corresponding month of 2025.
Bajaj Auto secured the second position with sales of 32,898 electric two-wheelers, reflecting a 71.68% increase from the previous year. Ather Energy followed closely, posting the highest growth among leading players. The company sold 27,034 units in April 2026, more than double the 13,332 units sold in the same month last year.
In the electric three-wheeler category, retail sales grew modestly by 3.3% year-on-year to 64,549 units. Electric commercial vehicles, however, recorded the sharpest rise, with sales more than doubling to 2,245 units in April 2026 from 902 units a year earlier.
The strong start to the financial year highlights the accelerating adoption of electric mobility across multiple vehicle segments in India.
