Saturday, August 02, 2014: The Madhya Pradesh government is planning to set up the country’s largest ultra mega solar power plant (UMSPP) in the Rewa district of the state. The UMSPP project, a joint venture between the state government, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Power Grip Corporation and the Solar Energy Corporation of India would entail an investment of Rs 40,000 million.
The state government has chosen thirteen hectares of land spread over four villages of Barseta, Ramnagar, Latar and Badwaar in Gurh tehsil of Rewa, for the ambitious project. Once set up, the electricity generated from the plant would be available to end-users at a price of 5.40 paise per unit. Notably, this would be the lowest price for a unit of power in th country to date.
Earlier, Minister of State for Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal had informed the Lok Sabha that the BJP-led NDA government is promoting renewable energy generation across the country by way of providing various fiscal and financial incentives. “Ultra mega solar power projects have been planned in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The capacity will depend upon availability of land. On an average 1 MW of solar photovoltaic power project generates about 1.6 million units of electricity per annum,” Goyal had said.
