India’s rapidly growing solar sector could evolve into a major export base for Europe if domestic manufacturing expands across the solar value chain, according to Renewables Norway.
India’s fast-growing solar sector presents a major opportunity not only for domestic energy transition but also for exports to Europe, according to The Economic Times.
Bård Vegar Solhjell, CEO of Renewables Norway, said India could become a key exporter to Europe if it strengthens manufacturing capabilities across the solar value chain, from rare earth minerals to solar wafers and cells.
Speaking to PTI during his India visit, Solhjell said, “India is a compelling market not just for solar, hydro and offshore wind, but also for understanding its role in the global energy transition.”
A Norwegian delegation led by Solhjell is currently in India, engaging with government officials, industry leaders and research institutions to explore deeper cooperation in clean energy.
He mentioned that energy storage and transmission infrastructure remain main challenges as India scales renewable capacity. Solhjell added that pumped hydro storage is one area where India and Norway could collaborate more closely.
Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, also highlighted growing opportunities for collaboration, particularly in renewable energy projects, solar manufacturing and offshore wind development across Indian states including Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
