Indium Corporation has promoted Hongwen Zhang, Ph.D., to Research and Development (R&D) Director, where he will lead technology development, product road-mapping, and the advancement of the company’s materials portfolio.
Reporting directly to President and CEO Ross Berntson, Zhang will join the company’s management team and focus on aligning R&D activities with customer requirements while accelerating materials innovation.
Zhang has been with Indium Corporation since 2008, when he joined as a Research Metallurgist. Most recently, he served as Senior R&D Manager, Alloy Group, following roles as Manager and Principal Metallurgist.
During his tenure, Zhang has contributed to the development of high-temperature, lead-free solder materials and the company’s metallurgical capabilities. He is a co-inventor of Indium Corporation’s Durafuse technology and led the development of the BiAgX alloy family, described by the company as its first non-gold-based high-temperature lead-free solder technology.
Zhang holds a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University, as well as a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He has authored two book chapters and more than 50 conference and journal papers and holds more than 10 U.S. and international patents. His recognitions include the 2023 SMTA Members of Technical Distinction Award and two Indium Corporation Silver Quill Awards. He is also a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
The appointment is expected to strengthen Indium Corporation’s focus on materials innovation, product development, and customer-driven R&D.
