Marking India’s 100th transfer deal, ISRO signs a pact with HAL to produce cost-effective small satellite launch vehicles.
India’s space sector achieved a milestone on Wednesday with the signing of its 100th technology transfer agreement, enabling Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to independently manufacture Small Satellite Launch Vehicles (SSLVs).
The agreement, facilitated by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), was formalised between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), IN-SPACe, and HAL. Under the deal, ISRO will transfer SSLV know-how to HAL over the next 24 months, offering training and technical guidance. The collaboration will culminate in two SSLV missions during the agreement period.
Officials said the initiative will strengthen India’s position in the fast-expanding global small-satellite launch market, where demand for cost-effective and flexible launch services continues to rise. SSLVs are designed to provide low-cost, quick-turnaround access to space for satellites weighing up to 500kg.
“ISRO has a dynamic technology transfer mechanism to realise shared goals. We will guide HAL on the preparedness-to-flight aspects of SSLV, defining the next phase of deep-tech collaboration in India’s space sector,” said Dr V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO.
IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka described the partnership as a vital step towards strengthening India’s industrial space ecosystem.
HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr D.K. Sunil said the company would leverage its engineering and manufacturing capabilities to build SSLVs, train its workforce, and establish a self-reliant, cost-competitive business serving both domestic and international customers.
The SSLV project is expected to reduce dependence on ISRO for small satellite launches and expand India’s commercial space capabilities.
