Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s upcoming Assam visit is expected to deepen India-Japan ties, with semiconductor manufacturing and infrastructure investments high on the agenda.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is expected to visit Assam in early July, accompanied by over 50 Japanese companies and business groups, in a move that could strengthen India-Japan cooperation in semiconductors, infrastructure and energy.
According to The Economic Times, the visit is expected to accelerate investment discussions as Japanese companies increase their focus on India’s growing manufacturing ecosystem.
Major Japanese firms including Suzuki, Itochu and Toyota Tsusho are likely to participate. The visit will also coincide with the India-Japan annual summit.
A key focus is semiconductor manufacturing. Tata Group is investing about ₹27,000 crore to build a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Assam. The project is expected to support India’s chip manufacturing ambitions and strengthen the Northeast’s industrial ecosystem.
The Indian government sees the Northeast as a strategic manufacturing and logistics hub under its Act East policy. Rising Japanese interest in the region could improve supply chains, boost industrial growth, and create new investment opportunities.
The visit is expected to further deepen economic ties between India and Japan across high-tech and strategic sectors.
