Joby Aviation and Toyota have announced a new joint venture to manufacture electric air taxis as both companies push toward commercial deployment of next-generation urban mobility solutions.
Joby Aviation and Toyota Motor have announced a joint venture to increase production of electric air taxis, marking a key step toward commercialising urban air mobility.
According to Reuters, the partnership will focus on manufacturing Joby’s S4 series electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, as the company moves closer to securing regulatory approvals for commercial operations.
The new venture, called Joby Toyota Aero Manufacturing Preparation Company (JTAMPC), will oversee production planning for the aircraft. Under the agreement, Joby will hold a 49% stake, while Toyota will own the remaining 51%.
Joby said the joint venture will receive exclusive rights to manufacture the S4 aircraft and related intellectual property on a royalty-free basis.
The California-based company’s electric air taxi is a six-rotor aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing like a helicopter while flying like an airplane. It can carry one pilot and up to four passengers.
Earlier this year, Joby completed a week-long air taxi demonstration in New York City, showcasing point-to-point urban flights.
The partnership strengthens Toyota’s presence in advanced mobility while helping Joby scale production ahead of commercial launch.
