Friday, May 16, 2014: Welspun Renewable Energy has commissioned the largest solar power project in Karnataka. It was a twin project of total 19 MW capacity. The first part of the project, of 8 MW capacity was commissioned last year.
It was already four months ahead of its schedule at that point in time. The remaining 11 MW capacity took just three months to complete. The complete project came online ten months ahead of the schedule and has helped the state in generating power to combat frequent blackouts.
Welspun’s project in based in the Chitradurga district and will supply the grid for the next 25 years. The amount of power generated here is sufficient to power 48,000 homes. It is worth mentioning here that the 9MW project got its tender in the first phase of state’s solar auction. No other entries of the tender have commissioned a project as of now. Welspun is the first player to complete the second phase of the tender as well. As many as 13 developers received the state Letters of Intent (LoI) as part of the second phase. Karnataka is aiming at 126MW of solar power installed capacity during 2013-2014.
