The deal supports Kyocera’s push into next-generation imaging, projection and immersive digital applications.
Kyocera Corp. has signed an agreement to acquire the laser diode business of Ushio Inc., a move that will strengthen its capabilities in RGB laser technology and support growth in automotive, augmented reality (AR) and advanced display applications.
As part of the transaction, Ushio will transfer its laser diode operations into a newly established company, which Kyocera will acquire in full. The deal is expected to close on April 1, 2027.
The acquisition will enhance the technology portfolio of KYOCERA SLD Laser (KSLD), Kyocera’s U.S.-based subsidiary specializing in laser diode development. KSLD has strong expertise in gallium nitride (GaN)-based blue and green laser diodes and is developing RGB laser solutions for automotive road projection systems, AR glasses and metaverse-related devices.
However, the company has had limited in-house capabilities in red laser diodes, which are typically built using gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology. Ushio’s laser diode business brings proven red laser products and technical expertise, enabling Kyocera to build a more complete RGB laser portfolio.
The addition of Ushio’s technology is expected to accelerate product development and strengthen Kyocera’s competitiveness in next-generation imaging, projection and display markets. By combining blue, green and red laser technologies under one roof, the company aims to expand its offerings across a range of high-growth applications.
The acquisition also reflects Kyocera’s broader strategy of investing in advanced photonics technologies to support future innovation. As demand rises for laser-based solutions in mobility, consumer electronics and immersive digital experiences, the deal is expected to enhance Kyocera’s ability to deliver integrated optical technologies and capture new market opportunities.
