LG Electronics will supply Renault’s first mass-produced commercial SDV with a unified instrument cluster and infotainment platform, helping consolidate cockpit electronics and reduce system complexity.
LG Electronics will supply an integrated cockpit electronics solution for Renault Group’s New Trafic E-Tech Electric, the automaker’s first mass-produced commercial vehicle built on a software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture. The vehicle has also received the International Van of the Year award.
The solution combines the instrument cluster and infotainment system within an SDV-optimised control framework, supporting a more unified cockpit UX/UI while reducing electronics complexity through component simplification and system optimisation.
Unlike conventional vehicles, where dedicated electronic control units (ECUs) manage functions such as the cockpit, ADAS and powertrain, SDVs use centralised computing and software architectures to integrate multiple vehicle functions. They also support over-the-air (OTA) updates for adding features and upgrading existing functions after production.
LG’s integrated cockpit serves as a control platform for the cockpit domain. It combines driving information such as vehicle speed, RPM and warning indicators with infotainment functions including navigation and media playback, allowing information to be presented more consistently across displays.
The solution draws on LG’s automotive infotainment, software and UX/UI expertise. LG and Renault have collaborated for years, including on an Android-based automotive infotainment system in 2021. LG says it plans to expand partnerships with global automakers as demand for SDV automotive electronics grows.
“Building on our close collaboration with Renault Group and other global automakers, we will continue to advance the core technologies and solutions needed to support the mobility industry’s transition to SDVs,” said Eun Seok-hyun, President, LG Vehicle Solution (VS) Company.
