US semiconductor firm Micron is establishing Gujarat’s inaugural chip plant in India, which is expected to generate 5,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs over the next few years.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Micron Technology’s CEO and President, Sanjay Mehrotra, in the US to discuss business prospects in India’s emerging semiconductor sector. Goyal was in San Francisco for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) meeting.
Micron, a US-based semiconductor company, is in the process of establishing India’s first chip facility in Gujarat. This venture is expected to create 5,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs in the future. The Indian government recently approved Micron’s plan to build a semiconductor test and packaging unit valued at USD 2.7 billion.
Goyal, in a social media post, highlighted his discussions with Mehrotra about the potential for Micron to grow its presence in India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem.
Additionally, Goyal had a meeting with YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, where they explored opportunities for YouTube’s expansion in India.
The Indian commerce ministry reported that Goyal also engaged with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists of Indian origin. He encouraged them to consider India as a prime investment destination and to support India’s emerging tech talent, especially in areas like artificial intelligence.
Goyal’s participation in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum was also noted. APEC’s membership includes several countries across the Asia-Pacific region, such as Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, and Russia.
