The pilot project will store surplus solar energy, improve grid stability, and help reduce nearly 54 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
Maruti Suzuki India has commissioned a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana, marking another step in the company’s efforts to strengthen renewable energy usage and improve energy efficiency across its operations.
The battery storage system has been integrated into the plant’s internal electricity distribution network on a pilot basis. It is designed to store excess electricity generated by the facility’s solar power installation during periods of low demand, such as holidays, and supply that stored energy when required. The system is also expected to enhance the stability of the plant’s power network.
The initiative complements the 20 MWp solar power plant that Maruti Suzuki commissioned at the Kharkhoda facility in 2025. While the solar installation continues to generate electricity even when manufacturing operations are paused, the absence of power demand during holidays previously limited the utilization of this renewable energy. The addition of the battery storage system enables the company to capture and use this surplus power more efficiently.
According to the company, the BESS has an estimated operational life of around 15 years and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 54 tonnes annually by maximizing the use of clean energy generated at the site.
Commenting on the development, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, said the project aligns with India’s push to build self-reliant and sustainable energy ecosystems. He added that deploying battery energy storage technology is part of the company’s broader strategy to improve renewable energy utilization while supporting its long-term sustainability goals.
The pilot project reflects the growing adoption of battery storage systems in industrial facilities, where they play a key role in optimizing renewable energy consumption, improving energy resilience, and lowering carbon emissions.
