Maruti Suzuki To Launch High-End SUV EV With 550km Range Next Year

Executive Director Rahul Bharti says Maruti Suzuki will build a high-spec SUV EV with a 550km range and 60kWh battery at Gujarat’s Hansalpur Plant.

Maruti Suzuki revealed on Wednesday that its new electric SUV will be produced in Gujarat, in addition to its existing Hansalpur facility, located about 90 km away. Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Ltd (SMG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki and operational since February 2017, manages this plant.

Maruti Suzuki Executive Director (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bharti announced that the company’s first EV, an SUV, is slated for launch in the 2024-25 financial year, originating from SMG’s Gujarat plant. The Hansalpur facility, currently comprising three plants – A, B, and C – will expand with a new production line for this EV. Bharti also mentioned that the upcoming EV SUV, produced at the SMG plant, is intended for export as well.

In March 2022, Suzuki Motor Corporation, SMG’s parent company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Gujarat government, committing Rs 3,100 crore to develop the Hansalpur plant for EV production.

Bharti revealed the EV concept car, highlighting its high specifications: a 550 km range on a single charge and a 60-kilowatt-hour battery. However, he noted that the exact production numbers from the Gujarat plant are yet to be finalized.

Furthermore, Maruti Suzuki announced a production milestone at the SMG plant, having recently manufactured its 3 millionth car on December 4. The Gujarat facility, with a yearly capacity of 7.5 lakh units, caters to both domestic and international markets, producing models like Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Fronx, and Tour S.
