The extension would boost global and domestic manufacturers seeking to establish integrated rare-earth permanent magnet production facilities in India
To give prospective bidders an additional month to participate, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has extended the timelines for its global tender under the Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) manufacturing scheme.
This order came out in response to multiple stakeholders’ requests. The revised submission deadline has changed from June 29, 2026, to July 29, 2026, and the opening of technical bids has been rescheduled from June 30, 2026, to July 30, 2026.
The extension would boost global and domestic manufacturers seeking to establish integrated rare-earth permanent magnet production facilities in India.
The global tender, originally floated on March 20, 2026, seeks to identify manufacturers as beneficiaries under the REPM scheme to set up end-to-end manufacturing facilities that cover the complete value chain—from Neodymium-Praseodymium (NdPr) oxide to finished rare earth permanent magnets.
The tender follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of the ₹7,280-crore Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets on November 26, 2025, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first-of-its-kind scheme aims to establish 6,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of integrated manufacturing capacity in India, strengthening the country’s self-reliance in a strategically important technology.
Rare earth permanent magnets are among the world’s most powerful magnets and are essential components in electric vehicles, wind turbines, consumer electronics, robotics, aerospace, and defence systems. With global supply chains heavily concentrated in a few countries, the government’s initiative is expected to reduce India’s import dependence while creating a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
By fostering indigenous production across the entire value chain, the REPM scheme is expected to enhance supply chain resilience, support India’s clean energy and advanced manufacturing ambitions, and position the country as a competitive global hub for rare earth permanent magnet production.
