Multifunctional SMT Center – One machine platform for all tasks

Wednesday, November 07, 2013: Essemtec’s Paraquda platform is in daily use at both EMS and OEM customers worldwide. The proven technology and mineral cast base in combination with a high-precision H-drive ensures the highest accuracy in continuous operation. At productronica, Essemtec will introduce new variants of the successful placement system. Paraquda has the ability to change from a SMT placement machine into a multifunctional production center for various tasks.

SMT placement tasks
One machine platform processes all types of components – from 01005 to large components or connectors. Unmatched changeover times and a highly flexible assembly are ensured by the highest number of feeder slots per square meter in the market, intelligent, servo-driven kitting without production stop, and an intuitive, touch screen-based operation.

Paraquda platforms are available in different models. Modular construction allows for a gradual increase in performance – first by placement head choice and second by multiplication of modules as well as an expansion by means of options according to the requested applications.

Vary placement performance according to requirements
Essemtec will premier its entry-level system Paraquda2 at productronica. This machine is an absolute tradeshow novelty. Depending on the required output, customers can easily exchange the placement heads. Paraquda2 is an identical sister model of the successful pick-and-place system Paraquda4, but with a reduction to 2 Z-axis in the placement head. Paraquda2 can be upgraded to a Paraquda4 at any time with a simple exchange of the placement head. The installation of the 4 axis placement head can be carried out by a service technician on-site, quickly and with minimum downtime. Thanks to the rental option of a 4 Z-axis placement head, placement performance of production lines can be adapted quickly and flexibly, without investing long term in new equipment and tying up valuable capital. Obviously, customers can permanently upgrade to a Paraquda4 with 4 Z-axis.

Dual-solution for higher throughput and feeder capacity
Beside these two machines, Essemtec also offers Paradoble that consists of two full-fledged Paraquda4 platforms connected in a series. This allows an increased placement speed up to 16,500 components per hour according to IPC. The dual-solution can be equipped with an additional conveyor between the machine parts. This allows the use of feeder slots between the machines – in total 300 to 360 feeders can be installed. Furthermore, production costs can be reduced due to the machine’s easy, quick changeover. Alternatively, the machine can be equipped with an L-conveyor that allows set-up over a corner. Thus, machines can be installed even in production areas with restricted space.

Integration of dispensing systems

Essemtec is a specialized manufacturer of high-performance dispensing systems that also are based on the Paraquda platform. Dedicated dispensing solutions can be integrated 1:1 in pick-and-place systems. The software is the same as the high-speed/high-performance jet dispenser Scorpion also manufactured by Essemtec and offers identical professional high-speed dispensing solutions.

Jetting of solder paste
As a trade show innovation, Essemtec will introduce the combination of solder paste jetting directly on a pick-and-place machine. Prototypes and small series are easily assembled without stencils, reducing turnaround time considerably. Expensive stepped stencils can be eliminated with the dispensing of additional solder paste. Jetting of solder paste allows quicker, more precise solder paste dots than any other system in the market. Everything – from jetting to picking-and-placing components – is done automatically by the machine.

Jetting or dispensing of SMD glue
Jetting or dispensing of SMD glue is an additional possible combination that is increasingly being used in the automotive industry and other sensitive applications. A further process step that was done on an additional machine now can be integrated into the multifunctional center of Paraquda.

Integrated quality and process assurance
The newly available surface and height measurement option measures every PCB before mounting and/or dispensing. Therefore, it ensures all processes, even for sophisticated applications.

Additional possibilities for quality assurance such as bar code based set-up, automatic cleaning and fully-automatic parameterization of dispensing systems also are available as standard options.

To further reduce the potential of defects, Essemtec provides a component verification unit (CVU). The unit measures the electrical properties of resistors, capacitors, inductors for single components or alternatively for four components simultaneously for a higher throughput.

SMART solution concept
Essemtec provides a fully modular hardware and software concept that enables complete optimization of a modern SMT production. Essemtec’s SMART solution suite not only optimizes machine throughput but also allows integration of storage systems with or without observation of MSL times or ERP/MRP systems.

Visit Essemtec in booth A3.341 at productronica from November 12-15, 2013 to learn more about the product innovations.
