Mysuru’s Semiconductor Revolution Unfolds

The city of Mysuru is poised for significant economic transformation with the establishment of a new semiconductor manufacturing unit in Kadakola. This initiative is expected to generate approximately 460 jobs, underscoring the region’s growing prominence in India’s semiconductor landscape. citeturn0search1

The Indian government has been actively promoting the semiconductor sector through various policies and incentives. In 2024, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology approved the establishment of four semiconductor manufacturing units nationwide as part of the Semicon India Programme. Additionally, nine projects received approval under the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS). These initiatives are anticipated to create approximately 15,710 jobs, significantly contributing to the growth of the semiconductor and electronics sectors in India.

Mysuru’s selection as a site for semiconductor manufacturing aligns with the broader national strategy to decentralize industrial development and promote regional economic growth. The city’s infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strategic location make it an attractive destination for such high-tech industries. The global semiconductor industry has been experiencing robust growth, with worldwide sales increasing from $139.0 billion in 2001 to $526.9 billion in 2023, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 6.0 percent. Projections indicate that sales will continue to rise, reaching $588.4 billion in 2024 and $654.7 billion in 2025.

India’s push into the semiconductor sector is part of a strategic effort to become a global hub for electronics manufacturing. The government’s commitment is evident in the increased budget allocations and policy support aimed at fostering a conducive environment for semiconductor manufacturing. The establishment of units like the one in Mysuru is a testament to this vision, promising not only job creation but also the development of ancillary industries and the upskilling of the local workforce. It is expected to catalyze economic growth in the region, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the country’s position in the global semiconductor market.
