Thursday, May 01, 2014: A new multilingual knowledge portal called ‘Vikaspedia’ was recently launched in Guwahati with an aim to provide information, and ICT-based knowledge products and services in the areas of social development. The portal has been developed as part of India Development Gateway (InDG), a national-level initiative of Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India. It is executed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Hyderabad.
Vikaspedia will provide responsive and authenticated information on agriculture, health, education, energy, social welfare and e-governance. The portal is available in five different languages currently. People can volunteer to create collaborative content for the portal and contribute their bit for spreading knowledge relating to social development to benefit a larger audience.
As such, Dr Pradip Kumar Sarmah, executive director of the Centre for Rural Development (CRD), Assam has appealed to all the people of the state to register themselves as content contributors on the portal. “One can also share content based on one’s knowledge and experience that is latest and authenticated. Write-ups should be in simple and easy-to-understand manner and acknowledge the source of information. The beauty of the portal is uniquely designed to share all the information in Assamese unicode,” Sarmah was quoted as saying.
