NVIDIA and Coherent Corp. have signed a multi-year strategic agreement to develop advanced optical technologies to support next-generation AI infrastructure.
Under the non-exclusive agreement, NVIDIA has made a multibillion-dollar purchase commitment for advanced laser and optical networking products. The company will also invest $2 billion in Coherent to support research and development, expand manufacturing capacity, and strengthen operations in the United States.
Optical interconnects and advanced packaging technologies are becoming essential for modern AI infrastructure. They help deliver ultra-high bandwidth and energy-efficient connectivity needed for large AI data centres. Through this partnership, NVIDIA will contribute its expertise in AI, accelerated computing, and networking, while Coherent will provide advanced optical technologies and manufacturing capabilities. The collaboration aims to scale up research and production to support the growing global demand for AI data centres.
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, said that computing has changed significantly in the age of AI, where systems generate information in real time for every interaction. He added that the partnership with Coherent will help develop next-generation silicon photonics to build AI infrastructure with greater scale, speed, and energy efficiency.
Jim Anderson, CEO of Coherent, said the agreement highlights the company’s role in enabling future AI data centres. He added that the partnership builds on a 20-year relationship with NVIDIA and will expand access to multiple product families to support the development of next-generation AI facilities.
