OpenAI Deepens Tech Ties with South Korea’s Samsung

The ChatGPT maker expands its alliance with the South Korean giant to cover custom AI silicon development and widespread enterprise deployment.

OpenAI is strengthening its partnership with Samsung Electronics as the artificial intelligence firm advances its proprietary silicon strategy and expands enterprise services across South Korea.

“One of the areas where we have made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung Electronics is our joint production and research on the next-generation chips we are developing,” said Harrison Kim, general manager of OpenAI Korea, during a press conference in Seoul.

Kim highlighted that Samsung represents one of the largest global deployments of ChatGPT Enterprise, with staff employing the tool across research and development, marketing, and sales. Samsung Electronics declined to comment on specific corporate client relationships.

The announcement follows OpenAI’s introduction of its first custom AI inference chip, Jalapeno, designed in collaboration with Broadcom and scheduled for production by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix previously signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI’s Stargate data centre project. Kim noted that growing hardware demands make collaboration with South Korean semiconductor suppliers a primary focus.

The partnership comes as Samsung integrates generative AI across its mobile, television, and home appliance business units. OpenAI reported that the number of South Korean ChatGPT Enterprise users grew nearly 28-fold year-on-year by late August, with adoption expanding from individual tasks to organization-wide workflows in legal, finance, and operational departments.

Outside the United States, South Korea maintained the highest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers late last year. OpenAI anticipates corporate uptake to gather further momentum following the recent launch of its latest model, GPT-6 Astra, designed for professional, software engineering, and cybersecurity applications.
