Otodata to Use Ericsson’s IoT Accelerator; Aims For Global Expansion

  • Otodata is working with Ericsson and Bell to embed SIM cards into its devices, allowing them to work on the public cellular network
  • IoT Accelerator will help the company scale up the wireless tank management business

In a recent announcement, leading ICT company Ericsson said that its connectivity management platform called IoT Accelerator will be leveraged by a Canadian IoT network operator, Otodata to transform its remote storage tank monitoring business, through Bell’s ‘largest network’ for IoT in Canada. Notably, Otodata’s monitors enable enterprises to track tank levels and maintenance needs remotely, but growth was hampered by connectivity limitations.

It pointed out that as supply levels for stored liquids, gases, fuels and oils become increasingly critical to the global supply chain, and with the wireless tank level monitoring market expected to reach nearly a quarter of a billion dollars by 2027, there is increasing pressure on tank operators to increase efficiency while keeping costs low. Otodata claims to make that possible through its real-time monitoring. With Bell providing both network connectivity and connectivity management, a cellular IoT-based solution is helping the company rapidly scale up operations.

Fast-growing Otodata realized a need to upgrade its initial connectivity solution, a private network focused on Eastern Canada. Otodata President Andre Boulay said, “Having full control over our solutions has allowed us to remain nimble and reactive to evolving customer needs, fueling the company’s rise to being the number one tank monitoring company in the world. Our customers are now able to abandon previous, outdated business models and enable their businesses to increase efficiency and lower costs while meeting the needs of their customers.”

It is learnt that Otodata has selected Cat-M1 connectivity from Bell and has built a proprietary device management platform that integrates with Ericsson IoT Accelerator. The company said that resultantly, the IoT Accelerator platform can transfer SIM data from an Otodata device to a customer account efficiently and cost-effectively.

The official note pointed out that this cellular IoT-enabled solution allows Otodata devices to work right ‘out of the box’ anywhere in the world, providing a significant competitive advantage for the company.

IoT GM at Ericsson, Kyle Okamoto commented, “We’re thrilled to continue our long-standing collaboration with Bell to help Otodata scale up their business across the globe. Our award-winning IoT Accelerator platform is helping businesses like Otodata capture the real-time insights that drive efficiencies, demonstrating how cellular technology leads to improved business outcomes.”

Otodata claims to be Canada’s largest Internet of Things network operator. As per Pitchbook, the 2008-born company provides wireless telemetry systems and services for use in industrial tank applications, communicates using various wireless technologies and designs proprietary products and technologies with ultra-low hardware costs for sectors ranging from automotive to agriculture.

Over a century old Ericsson is a Swedish company which aims to enable communications service providers and enterprises to capture the full value of connectivity. The company’s portfolio spans the following business areas: networks, cloud software and services, enterprise wireless solutions, global communications platform, and technologies and new businesses.
