A technology startup, Oyika, has received support from Arrow Electronics to establish battery charging stations in Southeast Asian cities. The startup has an agenda to support a new generation of clean, quiet electric motorbikes.
Petroleum-fueled vehicles are not good for the environment; hence, switching between petroleum-fueled motorbikes to battery power can significantly improve urban air quality in the region. Almost 90% have at least one motorbike, and without pollution controls, a motorbike’s small, inefficient engine generates tailpipe emissions equal to ten automobiles.
The major challenge for electric vehicles is recharging. So, Arrow has helped this startup to establish a smart battery exchange system at convenience stores. It is managed with a mobile app.
“Battery swapping essentially mimics the user behaviour of combustion technology,” said Roderick Chia, Oyika’s chief technology officer. “Swapping out batteries is very much like refilling a fuel tank. It takes a minute or two.”
Arrow also focuses on several aspects of Oyika’s integrated solution, including design engineering for the new smart battery and power management, 4G IoT telematics, component sourcing, smart battery monitoring, and GPS-enabled security and safety.
Oyika holds regular meetings at the NTU-Arrow Invent Lab, located in Singapore. Established in 2022 through a partnership with Nanyang Technological University, this lab serves as Oyika’s testing ground for battery stations across Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
Oyika has ambitious expansion plans, targeting markets in Indonesia, Vietnam, and beyond. The company’s battery-as-a-service model is aligned with five of the United Nations’ sustainability goals: climate action, affordable and clean energy, promoting good health and well-being, advancing gender equality, and reducing inequalities.
