Scrapping plans for 400+ jobs amid a growing trend of semiconductor facility cancellations across the U.S, Pallidus cancels $443M chip plant in South Carolina.
Semiconductor component maker Pallidus has abandoned plans to relocate its headquarters and manufacturing operations from Albany, New York, to Rock Hill, South Carolina, its $443 project.
The company had previously announced in February last year that it would build a 300,000-square-foot facility in Rock Hill, which was expected to create over 400 jobs. Production had been slated to begin in the third quarter of 2023.
Lisa Brown, the economic and urban development director for Rock Hill, confirmed the cancellation, adding that the company would focus on future recruitment efforts at its Waterford site and other locations.
She highlighted that Rock Hill offers valuable infrastructure, such as transportation and utilities, and a skilled workforce for businesses across a variety of industries.
Pallidus, along with York County Economic Development, however have not officially commented on the matter. Local officials had previously expressed enthusiasm about the project, which was seen as a potential economic boon for the area.
Pallidus’ decision follows a broader trend, as other semiconductor manufacturers have also cancelled planned facilities.
In April, SkyWater Technology scrapped its $1.8 billion semiconductor plant project in West Lafayette, Indiana, initially announced in 2022. The facility was intended to be part of a public-private partnership with Purdue University, located within its Discovery Park District, which hosts various high-tech research facilities.
