The company will be educating communities in the off-grid areas about the use of solar power.
Panasonic, the consumer electronics brand has decided to foray into the highly prospective solar energy sector in the country by launching its 100 Thousand Solar Lantern Project. The basic aim of the project is to contribute a total of 100,000 solar LED lights across the globe by 2018.
The company has also informed that around 5,000 compact solar lights have been allotted to off-grid areas in India. The Japan-based company has joined hands with the likes of World Health Partners, Swayam Shikshan Prayog, Plan International India and Sahaj in the areas of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal in India, who will be contributing 5,000 units of solar lights.
Apart from generating solar power, the project will also include other notable activities like empowering communities living in off grid areas, offering medical care service to promote healthcare.
Speaking about the initiative, Tarun Kapoor, joint secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), said, “There is a severe imbalance in demand and supply of power and India risks facing an energy crisis. Multi-national brands like Panasonic showing an interest in this sector shows the importance of social element for companies these days, who are looking at ways to involve in ecological development worldwide.”
