Stepping from global diplomacy to corporate strategy, Amitabh Kant joins HCLTech’s board as an Independent Director, bringing decades of policy experience and leadership in governance reforms.
HCLTech has announced the appointment of Amitabh Kant as an Independent Director on its Board, effective September 8, 2025.
Congratulating him on his new role, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Chairperson of HCLTech, said his policy experience would support the company’s long-term strategy. C. Vijayakumar, CEO and Managing Director, described the appointment as timely for the organisation’s current phase of growth.
Kant most recently served as India’s G20 Sherpa, where he helped coordinate the country’s presidency in 2022–23. The tenure concluded with the adoption of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, a document addressing global growth, digital public infrastructure, climate finance, and technology cooperation.
He earlier served as Chief Executive Officer of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), the government’s policy think tank. At NITI Aayog, he was closely associated with the Aspirational Districts Programme, an initiative aimed at accelerating development in underperforming regions.
Kant has also worked with the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion, the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, and the Ministry of Tourism. While serving as Secretary, Tourism, in Kerala, he launched the ‘God’s Own Country’ campaign. This was later followed by the ‘Incredible India’ campaign at the national level, which gained international visibility.
Over the course of his career, he has been associated with programmes such as Startup India, Make in India, and the Production Linked Incentive schemes.
In a brief statement, Kant said he looked forward to working with the Board of HCLTech.
