Powering heavy-duty vehicles in 20 minutes while backing India’s push for tech self-reliance, Plugzmart’s fully homegrown 240kW EV fast charger earns ARAI nod.
Plugzmart, a startup incubated at IIT Madras, has earned certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for its 240kW DC fast charger. Designed for heavy-duty electric vehicles, the charger has been entirely developed in-house, including hardware and software components.
According to the startup, Plugzmart’s charger aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ vision. It can charge premium electric vehicles and commercial fleets within 20 minutes. This makes it ideal for long-haul routes and high-demand usage.
The charger meets both Indian and international safety standards. It features smart power management to optimise energy use and reduce stress on the grid—an increasingly important factor as fast-charging networks grow nationwide.
In a report by the Machine Maker, founder and CEO Vivek Samynathan emphasised the importance of locally built technologies in strengthening India’s EV infrastructure. He noted that Plugzmart’s in-house development of controller and PLC systems helps cut costs and decreases reliance on imported parts.
Plugzmart develops EV charging technology, with a focus on designing and building DC fast chargers using locally sourced components. The startup concentrates on energy efficiency, safety standards, and reducing dependence on imported technology.
Its work contributes to broader efforts to establish a domestic supply chain for EV infrastructure, aiming to offer practical and scalable solutions suited to India’s transport needs.
