Could Mohali emerge as a semiconductor hub? Punjab courts NXP Semiconductors for an R&D centre, signalling a push into advanced electronics and design innovation.
Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has invited NXP Semiconductors to explore setting up a research and development (R&D) centre in Mohali, as part of efforts to attract investment into the state’s electronics and semiconductor sector.
The proposal was discussed during Mann’s ongoing visit to the Netherlands, where he is accompanied by the Industries Minister of Punjab, Sanjeev Arora. In meetings with NXP executives, including Maurice Geraets and public policy head Dr Ankit Pal, the Chief Minister outlined opportunities for collaboration in advanced electronics, semiconductor design and innovation ecosystems.
According to an official statement, Mohali is being positioned as a potential site for such a facility, supported by an expanding electronics base and availability of skilled talent. Mann highlighted the state’s plan to develop a technology cluster centred around Kalkat Bhawan in Mohali, located near the international airport and IT City.
The state government emphasised the presence of academic institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, the Indian School of Business Mohali, Plaksha University, Punjab Engineering College, and the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology as a steady pipeline for engineering and research talent.
Discussions also covered potential partnerships in system design and startup engagement through programmes such as the NXP Startup Challenge in collaboration with Startup Punjab.
Mann further pointed to the state’s automotive and auto-component ecosystem as a base for developing technologies in near-field communication, advanced driver assistance systems, and secure connectivity.
The Chief Minister also referenced Punjab’s Industrial and Business Development Policy 2026, which identifies electronics and semiconductors as priority sectors and offers incentives linked to fixed capital investment.
