The commercial market, however, boomed at a YoY rate of 50%, now holding 52% of the total Indian PC market.
As per the latest reports, India’s PC shipments (desktops, notebooks and tablets) grew by only 12% in the second quarter of this year. With just 4.6 million units shipped, this was the first time in the last four quarters that the market plunged below the 5 million units mark. Robust demand from the commercial sector, though, maintained the growth momentum. The illustration shows the shipment track in the last few quarters. It is noteworthy that notebooks, as usual, made up the largest shipped category (2.6 million units), followed by tablets(1.1 million units) and desktops (900,000 units).
Attributing the diminished consumer demand to the reopening of schools, Canalys Analyst Ashweej Aithal said: “The consumer market had a sharp dip of 12% in Q2, ending seven consecutive quarters of record expansion. In Q2, the segment accounted for 48% of the Indian PC market, down from 61% in Q2 2021. Reduced demand for tablets and notebooks contributed to the consumer market decline, with shipments of the two categories down 23% and 11% respectively. HP maintained its dominance in this sector with a 23% market share, helped by aggressive retail outlet expansion across the nation. Lenovo took second place with robust growth of 19% year-on-year, primarily due to the performance of its notebook line which carries a significant offline presence.”
While the commercial PC market is expected to expand as govt enhances its procurement and the enterprise segment demands more, Experts bet on the upcoming festive season and the back-to-college campaigns to energize the consumer segment. Aithal added, “Vendors must monitor the risk of inventory stock up as demand could drop more quickly than anticipated.”
