RAF Forms Dedicated Space Squadron To Neutralise Satellite Threats

No. III Space Effects Squadron to deploy offensive and defensive capabilities to protect vital UK orbital infrastructure.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smith, has announced the creation of the Royal Air Force’s first dedicated unit tasked with counteracting active threats to British satellites and orbital interests.

Formally designated as No. III Space Effects Squadron, the unit will operate alongside its existing sister formations: No. I Space Operations Squadron and No. II Space Warning Squadron. While the latter two units focus on surveillance and threat detection, the new effects squadron is designed to take direct action to disrupt, degrade, and deny hostile activity against UK space assets. Bringing together specialist personnel from across the Armed Forces, the unit will expand as new technology enters service.

Speaking at the UK Space Power Conference at the IET in London, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting underscored the strategic importance of space to national infrastructure, including satellite intelligence, positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services, missile warning systems, and weather forecasting. Streeting warned that Britain must keep pace in a modern space arms race, comparing the necessity of orbital control in the 21st century to naval dominance in the 19th century and air superiority in the 20th century.

Stationed at RAF High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire alongside the newly redesignated Air and Space Command, the squadron fulfills the Control of Space Requirement outlined in the government’s latest UK Space Strategy. The operational framework aligns with the recent Strategic Defence Review, which identified unhindered access to space as foundational to national security and economic stability. The squadron will operate in close alignment with UK Space Command, the joint military-civilian organisation established at High Wycombe in 2020.
