Jio’s proposed multi-billion-dollar satellite network aims to expand internet access beyond traditional terrestrial infrastructure.
Reliance Jio is preparing an ambitious entry into the satellite broadband sector with plans to deploy a large low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation aimed at providing internet connectivity across India and international markets.
According to industry reports, the telecom operator is evaluating a network of around 1,600 to 1,650 satellites orbiting roughly 650 kilometres above Earth. The proposed constellation would support broadband services as well as direct-to-device connectivity, allowing users to access communications services in areas beyond the reach of conventional telecom infrastructure.
The project, estimated to require investments of between $10 billion and $15 billion, is expected to be rolled out over the next two to three years, subject to regulatory approvals. The initiative would mark one of the largest investments by an Indian company in the space-based communications sector and position Jio among the world’s major satellite broadband operators. the project as a significant step toward establishing India’s presence in the rapidly growing space communications market. If approved, the network could support a range of services, including consumer broadband, enterprise connectivity and future direct-to-device communications, expanding Jio’s reach beyond its existing mobile and broadband operations.
The project is currently under evaluation by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), which oversees private-sector participation in India’s space industry.
