The contract for 12 indigenous marine gas turbine generator sets is aimed at strengthening India’s defence manufacturing base and enhancing the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a contract worth about ₹4.25 billion to Bharat Forge for the supply of 12 sets of 1.25 MW marine gas turbine generators for the Indian Navy. The agreement was signed in New Delhi on June 19 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The procurement has been undertaken under the Buy (Indian) category and mandates a minimum indigenous content of 60%, reflecting the government’s continued focus on boosting domestic defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imports.
According to the MoD, the project is expected to strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical naval technologies while supporting the objectives of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The programme is also expected to contribute to the development of a domestic industrial ecosystem capable of supporting the design, production, maintenance and lifecycle management of advanced naval equipment.
Marine gas turbine generators play a vital role in powering modern naval warships. They provide electricity for a wide range of onboard systems, including combat management systems, sensors, communication equipment and advanced weapons. Their reliability is considered essential for maintaining the operational effectiveness of naval platforms during missions.
The ministry said the contract represents a major milestone in building indigenous capability for the manufacture of marine gas turbine generators, a technology that has strategic importance for naval operations. Besides supporting local manufacturing, the project is expected to improve the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness by ensuring long-term availability of domestically produced equipment and maintenance support.
The acquisition is part of broader efforts by the government to expand indigenous defence production and enhance the participation of Indian companies in the supply of critical military technologies.
