Rocket Lab Announces Acquisition Deal With Iridium

This deal is going to strengthen Rocket Lab’s presence and give the company a position in the global satellite communications market

Rocket Lab Corporation has unveiled an acquisition deal with Iridium Communications Inc. The deal has been done in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $8 billion.

Through this deal, Rocket Lab will acquire all outstanding shares of Iridium common stock for $54 per share, combining Rocket Lab’s launch services, satellite manufacturing, and space systems expertise with Iridium’s global satellite communications network and L-band spectrum assets.

The acquisition makes the combined company a fully integrated space enterprise capable of designing, manufacturing, launching, and operating its own satellite constellations while delivering communications and positioning services to customers worldwide.

Through this agreement, Rocket Lab will immediately get a presence in space-based applications, including satellite Internet of Things (IoT), direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, positioning, navigation and timing (PNT), and safety-critical communication services. Rocket Lab aims to make on Iridium’s existing infrastructure by expanding into new commercial and government markets and accelerating the deployment of next-generation space-based services.

Iridium currently serves more than 2.55 million active subscribers globally through its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation and globally harmonised L-band spectrum. Its services support government, defence, aviation, maritime, industrial, and commercial customers by providing resilient satellite communications and alternative PNT capabilities in environments where traditional Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) or GPS signals are unavailable or compromised.

Rocket Lab, while combining its launch capabilities and spacecraft manufacturing expertise, and Iridium’s satellite network and spectrum assets, will accelerate the development of Iridium’s next-generation constellation. This includes advancing direct-to-device (Iridium NTN DirectSM) services, which are expected to play an increasingly important role in national security, emergency response, and resilient communications.

This deal is going to strengthen Rocket Lab’s presence and give the company a position in the global satellite communications market while expanding its role across commercial, defence, and government space applications. By integrating launch, manufacturing, satellite operations, and communications services under one organisation, both companies have already set an agenda to accelerate innovation and enhance the delivery of resilient, space-based connectivity solutions worldwide.
