Samsung will unveil a new version of foldable device every year like the company’s flagship smartphones, such as Galaxy S9 and may increase the production numbers depending on the market response
South Korean phone manufacturer Samsung said that it will launch its foldable phone in the first half of 2019 and manufacture nearly 1 million of the phones, according to a report in the news agency Yonhap News.
At a developer conference held last week in San Francisco, Samsung provided a glimpse of the company’s foldable-screen phone. However, the South Korean multinational didn’t provide the details regarding the device’s name, price and actual release date.
Koh Dong-jin, President – Mobile Communication Business, Samsung, informed journalists after the conference that the company would roll out the phone in the first half of the next year, no matter what.
To unveil new version every year
Samsung will unveil a new version of foldable device every year like the company’s flagship smartphones, such as Galaxy S9. The company may also increase the production numbers of the foldable phones depending on the market response, the news agency quoted Koh as saying.
Over 300 million phones in total has been shipped by Samsung last year, as per the data by market research firm TrendForce.
Koh also said that Samsung has created a team with Google for developing a software interface for its foldable devices, since he met with Google’s Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai two months back.
5G – A big opportunity
The company’s president further said that the 5G technology is offering “a big opportunity” for Samsung, as the strategy to make available the fifth-generation mobile networks has been shifted by nine months.
The world’s largest phone manufacturer said its foldable smartphone can be folded inward. The device will have a screen size of 7.4-inch when unfolded and 4.6-inch screen like a normal smartphone when folded.
