Suzuki Motor Will Set Up Lithium Ion Battery Recycling Facility In India

  • The company will manufacture 30 million cells per year in 2025 with a production capacity of more than 1GWh
  • The first phase of development will have an investment of around Rs 1,250 crore by the end of 2020

According to a report by Autocarpro, the Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) backed Automotive Electronics Power Pvt Ltd (AEPPL) is planning to set up a lithium ion battery recycling facility in India in the future. The report added that Hisashi Takeuchi, managing officer and deputy executive GM (global automobile marketing) at Suzuki Motor Corporation said that the company has adopted the system 3R (Reuse, Rebuild and Recycle) for safety and scrapping of lithium ion batteries.

He further said that an appropriate 3R system has to be established in the Indian market which will take in experiences from other developed markets. In order to achieve that, legislation by the government is required. As per the report, Takeuchi also claimed that SMC is working to expand production capacity and localise lithium ion battery parts in India. He added that parts like motor and inverter will likely get localised as well.

AEPPL is based in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad. It is a joint venture (JV) where SMC holds 50 per cent stake. Toshiba and Denso hold 40 per cent and 10 stake per cent respectively. The report said that the company will manufacture 30 million cells per year in 2025 with a production capacity of more than 1GWh.

The report added that the first phase of development will have an investment of around Rs 1,250 crore by the end of 2020. The second phase will see an investment of about Rs 3,715 crore.
