Tata Electronics, Besi Partner to Develop Advanced Semiconductor Packaging in India

The partnership aligns with India’s efforts to establish a domestic outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) industry

Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor assembly equipment supplier Besi have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop advanced semiconductor packaging capabilities in India. The partnership will support Tata Electronics’ planned $3 billion semiconductor packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

Under the agreement, Tata Electronics will evaluate Besi’s advanced packaging equipment and technologies for the facility. The companies will also explore local equipment support, technical collaboration and measures to ensure equipment readiness for production operations.

The collaboration will include engineering development, knowledge-sharing programmes, and specialised training and certification for Tata Electronics employees. The companies also plan to develop a joint technology roadmap and processes to address future packaging requirements and strengthen India’s semiconductor supply chain.

The partnership aligns with India’s efforts to establish a domestic outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) industry. It also follows a bilateral agreement between India and the Netherlands to strengthen cooperation in semiconductors and related emerging technologies.

“Advanced packaging is rapidly becoming one of the most critical differentiators in semiconductor innovation,” said Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics. He added that combining Besi’s expertise with Tata Electronics’ expanding manufacturing capabilities would help accelerate advanced packaging development in India, foster innovation and build a semiconductor ecosystem serving domestic and global customers.

Richard Blickman, CEO and Chairman of Besi, said the company’s range of advanced packaging solutions would support Tata Electronics’ ambition to become a global semiconductor manufacturing player. He added that the collaboration reflects both companies’ commitment to innovation, technology development and the advancement of the semiconductor industry.
