Tata Electronics’ Rs 270 Billion Assam OSAT Facility Confronts Elephant Vibrations And Snake Risks In Chip-Making

Tata Electronics is building a Rs 270 billion semiconductor assembly unit in Assam under India’s Semiconductor Mission, where elephants and snakes pose unusual challenges to chip-making precision.

Tata Electronics is establishing a Rs 270 billion outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam. The plant forms part of the Rs 760 billion India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which has approved 10 proposals to date. Among the facility’s potential clients is Tesla, led by Elon Musk.

The project faces unusual operational risks from elephants whose movements near the site have already damaged temporary structures. Their footfalls generate ground vibrations that can disrupt nanometre-scale chip-making by causing measurement errors, pattern distortions, and production delays. To counter this, the Assam government is supporting the construction of an elephant-proof barrier under Forest Department oversight.

“The barrier will be constructed to withstand elephant encounters,” said an ET source familiar with the project. A government official added: “The barrier serves dual purposes of elephant deterrence and security. The project has received comprehensive support, including barrier construction oversight by the Forest Department. Senior state officials, including the Chief Minister, are actively monitoring the development.”

Dr Kushal Konwar Sarma, elephant veterinarian and professor of veterinary science in Assam, explained: “Though not a formal elephant route, Assam’s elephant population is widespread. Jagiroad sees occasional elephant movement, typically in groups with calves, as the area borders hills. These adaptable creatures quickly adjust to their surroundings.”

Beyond elephants, the site also deals with snakes. “For three months, these specialists have been managing various snake species, from non-venomous to highly toxic varieties, ensuring their relocation within their natural habitat,” a source said.

An industry expert noted: “Standard construction protocols involve assessing underground water flows and ground stability. While OSAT facilities generally tolerate some vibration, fine-pitch assembly operations require extreme precision. Even half-micron displacements can disrupt pin alignment and affect production yields.”
