Tata Electronics, Sumitomo Chemical sign MoU to strengthen semiconductor supply chain

Tata Electronics is building India’s first commercial 12-inch (300 mm) semiconductor Fab in Dholera

Tata Electronics has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan-based Sumitomo Chemical to strengthen India’s semiconductor materials supply chain and support the development of a domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

Under the agreement, the companies will explore a collaboration under which Sumitomo Chemical will supply semiconductor materials to Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor Fab in Dholera, Gujarat. The materials will include photoresists, functional chemicals and high-purity chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, ammonia water and sulfuric acid.

The two companies will also explore the manufacturing of semiconductor materials and high-purity chemicals in India, with Tata Electronics supporting Sumitomo Chemical in evaluating opportunities for local production.

Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD, Tata Electronics, said the partnership would help strengthen the supply of high-quality materials for the company’s upcoming Fab while contributing to India-Japan cooperation in the semiconductor sector.

Satoshi Honda, Managing Executive Officer, Sumitomo Chemical, said the company aims to contribute to a stable supply of semiconductor materials and a more diversified semiconductor supply chain in India by leveraging its expertise in photoresists, functional chemicals and high-purity chemicals.

Tata Electronics is building India’s first commercial 12-inch (300 mm) semiconductor Fab in Dholera, Gujarat, with a planned investment of $11 billion. The facility is expected to manufacture chips for applications including automotive, mobile devices and artificial intelligence.

The company has also partnered with Taiwan’s PSMC to gain access to semiconductor technologies spanning 28nm to 110nm nodes. The partnership with Sumitomo Chemical is expected to further strengthen the Fab’s supply ecosystem by adding capabilities across semiconductor materials and high-purity chemicals.

The collaboration comes as India works to build a more diversified and resilient semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, with domestic capabilities in materials, equipment, manufacturing, process technologies and chip design.
