Tata Electronics plans to take a phased approach to chip manufacturing at its Dholera facility, starting with mature nodes before expanding into more advanced technologies.
Tata Electronics is set to begin semiconductor manufacturing in India using mature process technologies, with its upcoming fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, expected to initially focus on 55nm and 90nm chips before moving to more advanced 28nm production.
The development marks a shift from earlier expectations that Tata’s semiconductor manufacturing journey would begin primarily with the 28nm process node. The Dholera fab is being developed in partnership with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC).
Tata Electronics said the facility is planned to support chip production across process technologies ranging from 28nm to 110nm. The company added that starting with mature nodes is part of its planned technology roadmap, with 28nm expected to become a key component of its product portfolio.
The move highlights the challenges involved in establishing large-scale semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in India. Although mature nodes are less advanced than those used for cutting-edge processors, they remain important for automotive, industrial, consumer electronics, communications, and other applications.
The Dholera project is being developed with a planned investment of around $10.7 billion and is expected to receive significant government support under India’s semiconductor incentive programme. The facility is part of the Tata Group’s broader push into semiconductor manufacturing, which also includes investments in chip assembly and testing.
The company had earlier indicated that it could begin commercial chip production by the end of 2026. However, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said the Dholera fab is expected to commence commercial operations around mid-2028.
Tata’s semiconductor plans come as India seeks to reduce its dependence on imported chips and establish a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. The country is also increasing support for chip design, manufacturing equipment, and supply-chain development through new incentives.
The Dholera facility is expected to play a key role in building India’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, even as the country continues to develop the infrastructure, technology, and specialised workforce required to compete with established chipmaking hubs such as Taiwan and South Korea.
