Tata Power Secures 324 MW SECI Order from Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project

The Bhivpuri project is one of two major pumped storage developments being undertaken by Tata Power in the Western Ghats

Tata Power has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) to supply 324 MW of power from its 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project (PSP) in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.

The project was awarded under SECI’s tariff-based global competitive bidding (PSP-I) for the procurement of 1,500 MW/12,000 MWh of power from pumped hydro storage projects across India. Tata Power won the contract through an e-reverse auction and will operate under a 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase Agreement (PPA). The project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2029.

Developed under the Build, Own, Operate (BOO) model, the Bhivpuri PSP will provide eight hours of energy storage, helping supply electricity during peak demand periods. The project will be connected to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb Central Transmission Utility (CTU) Substation, part of the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS).

The award strengthens Tata Power’s presence in the long-duration energy storage segment, which is increasingly important for integrating renewable energy into the grid. Pumped hydro storage enables surplus electricity generated from solar and wind sources during off-peak hours to be stored and dispatched when demand is high, improving grid stability and reliability.

The Bhivpuri project is one of two major pumped storage developments being undertaken by Tata Power in the Western Ghats, alongside the 1,800 MW Shirwata PSP. Together, the two projects represent a 2,800 MW pumped storage pipeline, supporting the company’s clean energy expansion strategy and its Net Zero by 2045 target.

With this addition, Tata Power’s clean and green energy portfolio has reached 17.5 GW, including a development pipeline of 9.6 GW, of which 2.8 GW comprises pumped hydro storage projects. The company expects long-duration energy storage to play a key role in meeting India’s rising electricity demand while enabling greater integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
