A single platform engineered for three markets: passenger air taxi, urban cargo and air ambulance
The ePlane Company has successfully completed the assembly of its full-scale electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the e200X, marking a major milestone in its journey toward commercial operations.
The prototype, known as PT-01, integrates all key aircraft subsystems into a single structure, transitioning the programme from the design and simulation stage to physical testing. The e200X has been developed as a versatile platform capable of serving three key applications: passenger air taxi services, urban cargo transportation, and air ambulance operations.
The completion of a full-scale aircraft is a critical achievement in any aerospace programme. It demonstrates that the design can be manufactured at scale, validates the effectiveness of tooling and supply chains, and confirms the successful integration of multiple systems into a functioning airframe. This milestone represents the shift from conceptual development to real-world testing and validation.
The e200X will now undergo an extensive ground-testing phase at ePlane’s facilities. During this stage, the aircraft’s structure and onboard systems will be subjected to rigorous aerodynamic and mechanical load assessments before progressing to flight testing and the Type Certification process. Building a full-scale eVTOL aircraft remains one of the most complex challenges in modern aerospace, and only a select number of companies globally have advanced their programmes to this stage.
A notable aspect of the e200X programme is its high degree of vertical integration. The aircraft’s major components—including the propellers, airframe structure, landing gear, and battery pack—have been designed and developed in-house at ePlane’s facilities rather than sourced as finished assemblies. This approach provides greater control over performance, cost optimisation, and product development cycles.
The company has achieved this milestone with approximately US$21 million in funding to date, significantly lower than the capital invested in many international eVTOL programmes. This reflects ePlane’s focus on capital-efficient engineering and disciplined product development.
Industry analysts estimate the global eVTOL market was valued at approximately US$1.3 billion in 2023 and project it to grow to between US$20 billion and US$30 billion by 2030, highlighting the significant opportunities emerging in the urban air mobility sector.
Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Satya Chakravarthy, Founder of The ePlane Company, said that the company’s vision is to build world-class electric aircraft engineered and manufactured in India for global markets. He emphasised that the e200X was intentionally designed to be compact, enabling it to operate within existing urban infrastructure. The aircraft’s ability to support passenger, cargo, and medical missions on a common platform, combined with its capital-efficient development model, positions ePlane to compete effectively in international markets.
The company is supported by a distinguished leadership team and board comprising experienced aviation and technology executives. These include Vishesh Rajaram, Founder and Managing Director of Speciale Invest; Eash Sundaram, former Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Technology Officer at JetBlue and founder of JetBlue Technology Ventures; Aditya Ghosh, former President of IndiGo and co-founder of Akasa Air; alongside Founder Prof. Satya Chakravarthy and CFO Jayakrishnan R, who provide the company’s deep-technology and engineering leadership.
The need for advanced urban air mobility solutions is becoming increasingly evident worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation, road traffic accidents claim approximately 1.19 million lives annually. In medical emergencies, timely intervention during the “golden hour” often determines patient outcomes. India alone recorded 172,890 road-accident fatalities in 2023 while continuing to face shortages in emergency medical transport services. By bypassing traffic congestion, aircraft such as the e200X have the potential to significantly reduce response times for passenger transport, logistics, and emergency healthcare.
The ePlane Company plans to publicly unveil the completed e200X in the coming weeks before commencing a structured ground-testing campaign and subsequent flight trials. The company will pursue Type Certification through India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which became the first regulator to formally accept an eVTOL aircraft into its certification framework. Following domestic certification, ePlane intends to seek international approvals to access global markets.
Initial commercial deployments are expected to focus on early operational applications before expanding across passenger transport, cargo logistics, and air ambulance services as certification milestones are achieved.
