Creating substantial employment, TSMC reveals to invest $100 billion in Arizona plants. Is Trump’s dream of powering America’s chip industry reaching new heights?
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced plans to invest a substantial $100 billion in expanding its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in the United States. The announcement was made on Monday, during a White House event attended by US President Donald Trump and TSMC CEO C.C. Wei.
According to TSMC, this investment will fund the construction of two new semiconductor plants in Arizona, where the company is already building three facilities. The Taiwanese firm has previously committed $65 billion to these projects, bringing the total amount it will invest in the US to $165 billion.
Trump highlighted that this move is set to create “many thousands of jobs” and strengthen the domestic manufacturing sector.
TSMC, one of the world’s largest contract chip manufacturers and a key supplier for tech giants such as Nvidia, has also benefited from the CHIPS and Science Act, receiving $6 billion in funding. It began high-volume production at its first Arizona facility in late 2024.
Furthermore, this investment is set to align with President Trump’s broader agenda to revitalise US manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign-made chips.
The President emphasised the crucial role semiconductors play in the modern economy, stating that without semiconductors, there is no economy, as they power everything from AI to automobiles.
According to a report by the Manufacturing Dive, the move could also strengthen TSMC’s position within the global semiconductor market. Currently, it manufactures its most advanced chips exclusively in Taiwan, but with these new US facilities, the company may bring some of this production to American soil, particularly for AI-related chips.
TSMC’s announcement follows a similar commitment by Apple, which revealed plans to invest over $500 billion in U.S. manufacturing, as tech companies continue to expand their domestic operations.
