Globally coordinated AI governance is the only way to harness AI for humanity.~ Global AI Imperative
The United Nations (UN) has created a multi-stakeholder high-level advisory body on artificial intelligence (AI). The body contains 39 interdisciplinary experts from around the globe.
The advisory body aims to cultivate a globally inclusive approach for international governance of AI. The experts with diverse perspectives will offer AI governance solutions that align with human rights and sustainable development goals.
The experts include government officials, well established AI technology minds as-well-as civil society experts. They will analyse existing and emerging initiatives and organisations for interoperable governance.
Mira Murati, chief technology officer of OpenAI; Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Secretary-General’s envoy on technology; Haksoo Ko, chairman of Republic of Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC); and Yi Zeng, director of international research centre for AI ethics and governance are some of the executives with diverse backgrounds.
Vilas Dhar, president of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, is also a member. Vilas is a leading global voice on human equity in an AI-enabled world. There are researchers, professors, lawyers and government officials from six continents.
The UN body is expected to issue preliminary recommendations by the end of 2023. The final recommendations may be released by the summer of 2024.
